Bears in the Desert - CA
Get ready for four days of fun, sun, and FUR! The Palm Springs Bears present Bears In The Desert '08, from Thursday, May 29 through Sunday, June 1, 2008. The average temperature in Palm Springs in May is 95 degrees (Fahrenheit) and sun is the forecast most cast. Don't forget your sunscreen as you enjoy five pool parties (one with barbecue lunch, another with ice cream), one fabulous Bear Feast (Saturday night dinner), our famous Bear Dance, and the chance to bake Old Man Winter out of your bones for the season! Meet old friends or make new ones in the famously friendly Palm Springs style.

If you want to stay in the midst of the action, the Canyon Club Hotel is our host hotel and the place for you. Located at 960 Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, the Canyon Club features a beautiful pool in the center of its grounds, a pool that is sure to be brimming with bears and their friends at our Main Pool Party and Barbecue on Saturday. Their number is 877-258-2887. The Canyon Club is also where you check in for Bears In The Desert, regardless of where you're staying. Pick up your event badge and other registration materials there throughout the event. (Be sure to have your photo ID with you.)

Also on the preferred hotels list are Helios Resort (280 E. Mel Avenue, Palm Springs, 760-435-4677), Chaps Inn (312 E. Camino Monte Vista, Palm Springs, 800-445-8916), The Desert Bear Resort (530 E. Mel Avenue, Palm Springs 877-GO-GROWL), and The Desert Paradise Resort Hotel (615 Warm Sands Drive, Palm Springs, 800-342-7635). These are all wonderful hotels whose proprietors are well known to us. Each offers something a little bit different. Helios has an open, sunny style based on the Mediterranean-like setting around their pool. Chaps offers a comfortable hangout for the leather and bear crowds. The Desert Bear is of course The iconic Bear place to stay in Palm Springs, need we say more? Last but not least, The Desert Paradise presents a beautiful and calm hideaway with its sumptuous grounds and gardens.

The fun starts Thursday evening, May 29, at the Bears' regular weekly get-together at Koffi in The Corridor in Palm Springs. For this event we expand to two hours, from 5 to 7pm. Socialize with visitors and locals, make dinner plans, and enjoy a beverage before the Early Bird Pool Party at Helios Resort. This party is from 9:00pm to 12:00 midnight. Water and soda and diet soda are provided. In years past this pool party has been a surprise favorite – we've had so many bears in the pool that the water nearly overflowed the sides! Helios is a great, intimate setting that is sure to promote lots of chances to get to know folks!

Friday morning there's coffee with the Bears at the Canyon Club Hotel from 8 to 10 am. (Bears In The Desert Registration is available 8am to 5pm at the hotel as well.) The afternoon pool party is at Chaps Inn from 12 noon to 4pm. Water and sodas are provided. From 5pm to midnight join the Bears at Hunters Bar in Palm Springs (302 E. Arenas Road) for the Bears In The Desert Welcome Party in conjunction with Fur Fridays. Drink specials, snacks and more – fun and games and some special surprise guests.

Saturday things really get into high gear. First there's Coffee with the Bears at the Canyon Club Hotel from 8am to 10am. (Event Registration is available at the Canyon Club Saturday from 8am to 4pm.) Then at 11am the Main Pool Party Event of the weekend begins right there at Canyon Club. The Main Pool Party includes a barbecue in addition to water and sodas. This year we're glad to welcome back as DJ the well-loved “Chub Jim” who will be spinning the tunes to set the party mood! The pool party runs until 4pm to give everyone a chance to get ready for the evening's festivities which begin at 6pm with our “Bear Feast” dinner – this year at the Rock Garden Cafe (777 S. Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs). The menu features not one, not two, but three entrees – Prime Rib of Roast Beef, Seafood Alfredo, and Baked Chicken. Add to that dinner rolls, green beans, roasted potatoes, a green salad and a Caesar salad, and assorted pastries and fresh fruit for dessert. Now you see why we call it a feast and not just a dinner! The feast runs until 8:30pm. Catch your breath and move up Palm Canyon Drive a bit to Oasis (611 S. Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs) for the Bear Dance from 9pm to 2am. Oasis is one of Palm Springs' favorite places to party and dance – come and help answer the question “do bears dance in the desert?” As if that wasn't enough, there's also our famous Saturday night Moonlight Swim Pool Party, back at the Canyon Club Resort Hotel. This runs from midnight to 3am, overlapping with the Dance.

Sunday morning the bears gather to breakfast at the Oasis Buffet in the Spa Resort Casino (401 E. Amado Road, Palm Springs). We'll be assembling at the Buffet at 8:30am in order to be seated as a group. (There is a modest $5.99 charge for the breakfast buffet.) From noon to 3pm join us at the Desert Bear Resort for our Ice Cream Social and Pool Party.

This year the Palm Springs Bears are offering a full Weekend Pass to the event for $135. Your Weekend Pass includes

    * access to all five pool parties (including Saturday's Main Pool Party and BBQ)
    * the Bear Feast Dinner
    * the Bear Dance
    * an event T-shirt
    * printed event program booklet
    * goodies bag.

Additionally Hunters Bar will be giving attendees (wearing their Bears In The Desert Badge) drink specials through the event period, not just during the welcome party.

The individual events are also available for on-site admission purchase as capacities allow. The price for the Main Pool Party and BBQ on Saturday afternoon is $35 (includes food and beverages). The Ice Cream Social and Pool Party at the Desert Bear Resort on Sunday afternoon is $15 (includes ice cream and beverages). The remaining pool parties include beverages and are $10 each (Early Bird Pool Party Thursday at Helios Resort, Friday afternoon pool party at Chaps Inn, Moonlight Swim on Saturday night at Canyon Club Resort Hotel).
